A positive change for people who are marginalised, and becoming a B Corp

Last financial year, one fifth of Dort's revenue came from supporting underserved people in the community. 13.66% of our revenue came from projects serving low-income and underserved populations. Another 5.35% went to accessibility work for people with disabilities.

With NSW Government, Dort conducted quantitative and qualitative research to help mitigate rental bond disputes, designed support for people in domestic violence situations, and worked on clarifying appeals processes for social housing. We also developed novel technology for NSW Treasury to help streamline document analysis processes and improve accessibility compliance.

The B Corp assessment

B Corps are companies that meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency, legally committing to balance profit with purpose. They represent a growing movement of businesses using market forces to solve societal problems rather than create them.

Dort is now a B Corp with a score of 105.7, which is more than double the median score of 50.9.

Our constitution explicitly states our purpose is to deliver returns to shareholders whilst having an overall positive impact on society and the environment. This means our Directors must consider long-term consequences, supplier relationships, community impact, environmental effects, member interests, and our ability to create positive social and environmental impact. Our Advisory Board provides strategic guidance to help us make better decisions and deliver on that purpose.

We hold ourselves and our suppliers accountable and set standards for fair labor practices, safe working conditions, and environmental responsibility throughout our supply chain. The code is based on Fair Labor Association and International Labor Organization standards, covering everything from fair wages and freedom of association to environmental compliance. For us, community means being clear about our obligations and holding ourselves and our partners accountable to them.

We're carbon-positive through Trace and donated over 1% of annual sales to environmental causes via 1% for the Planet.

We partner with organisations building services that directly improve people's lives. An example of this is working with the NSW Government, including the NSW Housing Appeals Committee, Registrar of Community Housing, and NSW Fair Trading, on essential services for people who need them most.

We practice co-production, engaging participants from start to finish in the design process and giving them real influence over decision-making and outcomes. Whether that's changes to a service, product, or policy. In addition to our data analysis, we gather feedback from the people who actually use what we build to make sure we're delivering what they need.

How we select projects

Before we begin a project, we're disciplined and say no to anything that doesn't align with our principles, and we're willing to remain a small company to maintain this standard.

Why this certification matters

B Corp isn't a one-time achievement. They reassess every three years, which means we need to maintain and improve our standards continuously.

For us, it means measuring actual outcomes. We ensure we are receiving feedback from clients and suppliers during our projects.

B Corp certification holds us accountable to measurable standards. Now we need to keep meeting them.
